How do I take a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) test?

Taking a SIBO test can feel a bit overwhelming, but don't worry, we’re here to help.

Let’s break down what you have to do before the test, and what happens on the test day itself.

First, think about when you’re going to take it: you may need to wait until a few days or weeks after you’ve stopped taking particular supplements or medications.

Then, you need to follow a special diet the day before you take it.

On the day itself, you need to open your kit, get set up, and breathe into the tubes before sending them all off in the post.

Preparing for the test

Taking the test

If you have any questions or issues with taking your sample according to the instructions provided, it is important you contact us before you send your sample to the lab. Healthpath cannot guarantee to intercept your sample once it arrives at the lab, so it may still be processed.

After 30 minutes, give another breath sample in a second tube. Repeat this process at the timed intervals specified in the full instructions for a total of 2.5 hours. Read our full instructions here.

You’ll end up with 7 breath-filled tubes in total, which you can then send off to the lab for interpretation.

Return your samples using the pre-paid returns envelope via post box (choose a priority post box where available).

Your sample will be sent to our partner in London (please note the tracking number) then sent to our lab in Germany.

You'll receive an update when it arrives in Germany 2- 5 working days after posting.

What happens next?

Following a SIBO test, you can resume your normal diet while you wait for the results.

You should get your results back within ten working days.
